Bryan is basically a self-taught artist. As a young child he was constantly creating intricate designs with colored pencils and constructing assemblages out of all sorts of found materials. In college he took “Intro to Painting” class. Colley stood out immediately as his far reaching imagination created unique responses to the requirements of the professor’s assignments. The professor quickly realized that he was dealing with a unique mind and offered Colley an independent study in painting for his remaining 3 ½ years at college. He received highest honors for his painting for those entire 3 ½ years. This was followed by three years in law school where Colley had limited time to paint, but satisfied his creative impulses by producing hundreds of complex pen and ink drawings. These focused on puzzling interlocking animals and human forms. Some of which he calls “humanimals”!
Colley has painted with oil, acrylic, and water color to create over 500 pieces of art and has created over 1,500 pen and ink drawings.
Colley has exhibited in Kouros Gallery, New York City, The Bailey Gallery, Hobe Sound, Florida, RCK Gallery, Stuart, Florida and numerous community art shows. He has created textile designs for the likes of the renowned fashion designer Nicole Miller and poster design for local theatre groups.
Choosing not sell his art for a very long time as he painted it for his own enjoyment and consumption. Colley has chosen not to be represented by a gallery. Despite this, his paintings are distributed among a far reaching group of collectors in Equador, Brazil, Argentina, New York, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, Illinois, Massachusetts, Texas, Florida, Maine, England, Antigua, Italy and South Africa.
Colley loves the challenge of creating imaginative contemporary abstracts and occasionally realistic representations of landscapes, flowers, fish and wildlife.
He also is very accomplished at creating assemblages from found objects. Clearly enjoying the tactile experience of creating three dimensional artworks from orange crates and large wooden pallets and the like!
